The 27 Nakshatras: Your Lunar Mansion Explained
If you've only ever known your “Rashi” (Moon sign), you're using one of twelve labels to describe yourself. Classical Vedic astrology uses 27 labels — the Nakshatras. They're sharper, older than the 12-sign system, and they control something the Rashi doesn't: your Dasha.
What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra is a 13°20' slice of the zodiac — 360° divided into 27 equal parts. Each Nakshatra has:
- A ruling planet (in Vimshottari) — sets your starting Mahadasha
- A presiding deity — a mythic signature for its themes
- Four padas (quarters of 3°20' each) — each pada maps to a Navamsa sign
- A symbol and animal — used in Yoni matching and temperament reading
Your Janma Nakshatra is the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. It is arguably the single most important piece of Vedic data about you — more than your Sun sign, more than your Ascendant, depending on who you ask.
Why the Nakshatra matters more than the Rashi
- It fixes your Dasha. Your birth Nakshatra's ruling planet becomes your starting Mahadasha. Timing of every event in your life starts here. See our Dasha guide.
- Finer resolution than 12 signs. Two people born on the same day can have the same Rashi but different Nakshatras — and therefore very different personalities and timing.
- Muhurta (electional astrology). Choosing good dates for weddings, travel, and major decisions is almost entirely driven by Nakshatras, not signs.
- Compatibility. The Ashtakoot Guna Milan system uses Nakshatra-based parameters (Tara, Yoni, Gana, Nadi) as heavily as Moon-sign ones.
How to find your Nakshatra
You need the exact longitude of the Moon at your birth. A close estimate is not enough — a shift of a few minutes can move the Moon into the next Nakshatra or even the next pada, which changes your starting Dasha balance.
DestinIQ computes your Janma Nakshatra, pada, and deity automatically from your birth data using Swiss Ephemeris. Create your free Kundali — it's shown on your chart page.

The signature themes are directional, not prescriptive. Your lived experience of a Nakshatra depends on its condition, the Moon's strength, and the house and sign it occupies in your chart.
The 4 padas (and why they matter)
Each Nakshatra divides into 4 padas of 3°20'. Each pada maps to a specific Navamsa sign, which is why the pada finer-tunes your chart reading considerably. Two people can be in the same Nakshatra but different padas, and their Navamsa (D9) placements will differ — which means their marriage readings will differ.
Most casual astrology reports skip the pada. DestinIQ doesn't.
Nakshatra groups you will hear about
- Gandanta Nakshatras — Revati, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha (last pada) and Ashwini, Magha, Mula (first pada). Junction points considered delicate for births.
- Nadi types — Aadi, Madhya, Antya. Used in Kundli Matching.
- Gana types — Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (fierce). Temperament classification.
- Yoni symbols — 14 animal archetypes across the 27 Nakshatras, used for instinctive compatibility.
