Kundli Matching: How the 36-Point Ashtakoot System Actually Works

If your family is about to match horoscopes for marriage, read this first. No scare tactics, no gemstone upsells — just what Guna Milan, Mangal Dosha, and Nadi Dosha mean, and when a “low score” is actually fine.

Start here: Kundli Matching is one input, not a verdict

Kundli Matching gives you a signal, not a judgment. It tells you where two people are likely to naturally click and where they'll need to put in conscious work. It does not decide whether you should marry someone.

Any astrologer who tells you “18 points, so definitely go ahead” or “15 points, absolutely not” without opening the full charts is doing checkbox astrology. Real analysis looks at Navamsa, 7th-house condition in both charts, current Dasha, and transit timing.

The Ashtakoot system — 8 parameters, 36 points

KootMax PointsWhat it tests
Varna1Spiritual ego compatibility (caste-origin metaphor, not literal)
Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence
Tara3Birth-star compatibility, health and destiny alignment
Yoni4Sexual and instinctive compatibility (via Nakshatra animal symbols)
Graha Maitri5Mental and intellectual friendship between Moon lords
Gana6Temperament — Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa
Bhakoot7Moon-sign compatibility, financial and family harmony
Nadi8Health, genetic, and progeny compatibility
Total36All 8 combined

The rough scoring convention:

  • 0–17 points — not recommended by Ashtakoot alone, but check Navamsa and doshas before concluding
  • 18–24 points — acceptable
  • 25–32 points — good
  • 32–36 points — excellent on Ashtakoot (still check the rest)

The three “doshas” everyone hears about

Mangal Dosha (Manglik)

Caused by Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th from Lagna, Moon, or Venus. Classical texts list numerous cancellations — most charts flagged as “Manglik” online are already partially or fully neutralized by them. Two Mangliks marrying is a traditional offset. Mars in own sign or exalted is often a cancellation. Aspects from Jupiter or Saturn can neutralize.

If someone tells you a marriage can't happen only because of Mangal Dosha — get a second opinion.

Nadi Dosha

Same Nadi (Aadi / Madhya / Antya) between partners. Carries the heaviest weight in Ashtakoot (8 points) and classical texts treat it seriously, particularly for progeny. But classical cancellations exist — same Rashi but different Nakshatra, both partners in Nakshatras ruled by Jupiter, etc. The Nadi Dosha label on a website is a starting point, not a verdict.

Bhakoot Dosha

Certain Moon-sign distances between partners (6-8, 2-12, 5-9) are considered problematic. Cancellations exist here too — same Nakshatra lord, same Rashi lord, etc. Bhakoot is worth looking at but is lighter than Nadi.

What Ashtakoot misses (and why you need more)

Ashtakoot uses only the Moon's position in both charts. That's powerful but incomplete. It misses:

  • Navamsa (D9) compatibility — the “marriage chart”. Two partners with weak Ashtakoot but strong D9 cross-support often do very well.
  • 7th-house condition in each partner's Lagna — the natural partnership indicator.
  • Venus and Jupiter condition — Venus for emotional-physical harmony in both charts, Jupiter for the girl's marital happiness in classical texts.
  • Current Dasha alignment — are both partners in supportive Dashas for marriage now?
  • Transit timing — Jupiter and Saturn transits over key marriage points.

Red flags in how most sites do Kundli Matching

  • Only showing Guna Milan score — ignoring Navamsa, 7th house, Venus, Dasha.
  • Leading with remedies you can buy — “score is low, get this puja for ₹15,000” is a sales funnel, not astrology.
  • No cancellation analysis for doshas — a “Mangal Dosha detected” banner with no further nuance is low effort.
  • No context on current Dashas — two charts can match well but the timing can be off.

How DestinIQ does Kundli Matching

  • Full Ashtakoot calculation with each parameter explained, not just a total.
  • Mangal, Nadi, Bhakoot Dosha with classical cancellations applied, not blanket flags.
  • Navamsa cross-analysis — how each partner's D9 supports or challenges the other.
  • 7th-house, Venus, Jupiter review in both charts.
  • Current Dasha alignment — whether now is astrologically a supportive window for marriage for both partners.
  • Honest gaps — if a birth time is unclear, we say so and explain what that uncertainty does to the reading.

Add both partners as profiles under a Premium or Family plan and ask in chat: “Match these two charts for marriage.”
