Ruchaka Yoga
रुचक योग
One of the five Mahapurusha yogas. Mars in its own or exalted sign sitting in an angular house — a warrior-grade configuration that gives courage, command, and physical presence.

How Ruchaka Yoga is formed
Mars must occupy Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn (own or exaltation sign) AND sit in a kendra house — the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th — counted from either the Ascendant or the Moon. Both conditions are required; Mars in a kendra alone is not enough.
Effects when Ruchaka Yoga is present
The native acquires natural command, athletic build, the courage to take on visible adversaries, and a reputation for not backing down. Military, police, engineering, surgery, and sports careers do well. The voice carries; people obey before they consciously decide to. The shadow side is a temper that doesn't suffer fools — Ruchaka people rarely "diplomatically" defer.
- Strong leadership presence, often visible from teenage years
- Physical courage and high pain tolerance
- Career in defense, surgery, engineering, sports, or law enforcement
- Recognition for bold action — but also temper that has to be managed
Classical reference
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch. 36 — Pancha Mahapurusha) and Phaladeepika (Ch. 6) — both list Mars-in-kendra-in-own/exalted-sign as the formative condition.
Frequently asked questions about Ruchaka Yoga
Does Ruchaka Yoga work the same for women?
Yes — modern Vedic practice treats the yoga as gender-neutral. The classical phrasing was male-default but the planetary mechanics are not.
Can Ruchaka Yoga be cancelled?
It is weakened, not cancelled, if Mars is debilitated by aspect or combust by the Sun. A retrograde Mars often deepens the yoga rather than reducing it.
I have Mars in Aries in the 1st house — do I have Ruchaka Yoga?
Yes. Mars in Aries is own-sign, the 1st is a kendra, so both conditions are met.
