What Pitra Dosha actually is
In Vedic astrology the Sun is the karaka (significator) of the father, authority, and the paternal lineage. The 9th house represents dharma, ancestors, higher learning, and the father's blessings. When either of those is afflicted — particularly by the shadow nodes Rahu and Ketu or by a malefic Saturn — classical texts call the pattern Pitra Dosha and interpret it as unresolved karma from the paternal line that echoes into this life.
The idea isn't superstition; it's continuity. Your chart is not just your individual karma — it reflects the lineage you were born into. Pitra Dosha is the lineage's unfinished business showing up as a chart signature.
Classical chart indicators
- Sun conjunct Rahu (Grahan Dosha) — the most commonly cited signature.
- Sun conjunct or aspected by Saturn without benefic support.
- Sun in the 9th house under malefic affliction.
- 9th lord debilitated, combust, or placed in the 6th / 8th / 12th house.
- Rahu in the 9th without Jupiter's aspect.
- Malefics in 2nd and 4th — affecting family peace and maternal/paternal harmony.
One of these alone is noted but not always severe. Two or three together is when the pattern is considered clearly formed.
Classical cancellations
- Strong Jupiter in kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) — dharma blessing restored.
- Sun in own sign (Leo) or exalted (Aries) — father karaka is unshaken.
- 9th lord in own / exaltation / friendly sign — lineage line holds.
- Benefic aspects (Jupiter, Venus) on the afflicted Sun or 9th house.
- Shraddh / Tarpan done with sankalpa — the ritual remedy classical texts consistently endorse.
What the symptom lists get wrong
You'll see long lists of “symptoms” of Pitra Dosha online — miscarriages, career failure, family curses. Most of those are broad life patterns that could fit anyone on a rough week. The honest position: Pitra Dosha is a chart signature first. If the chart doesn't show it, the symptoms don't prove it. If the chart does show it, the symptoms are consistent with what classical texts describe — but the severity is modulated by Dasha, Jupiter, and the cancellations above.
Remedies that have classical standing
- Shraddh / Pitru Paksha tarpan — the paksh-period offerings to ancestors, done annually.
- Gaya Shraddh — the one-time pilgrimage ritual at Gaya, classically considered definitive.
- Feeding the elderly and needy in the father's name — practical dharma, no gatekeeping.
